Team Brat Plastics is made up of three ex-Pararescuemen and a Communication Specialist from the United States Air Force. The USAF Pararescuemen are part of an elite force that has less than 300 men military wide. The physically and mentally demanding Indoctrination Course graduates only 5-10% of its applicants. They are considered the best rescue specialists in the world. Their motto-"These Things We Do That Others May Live."
Team Brat Plastics, racing under Team Speedy Mail and later Team Speedy Brats, won the 2001 and 2002 Armed Forces EcoChallenge in Alaska. They went on to a 12th place finish at the International EcoChallenge in New Zealand. Out of 84 International teams, they were the fourth American team to cross the finish line. This was also the highest place finish ever for a military team. The team has been featured on NBC Dateline and The Discovery Channel.
After 14 years as a Pararescueman, 3 International EcoChallenges, and 2 Armed Forces EcoChallenges, Team Captain Ken Fournier says he's ready to take the primal challenge. Ken was twice selected as AFSOC Pararescueman of the Year. In addition, he rescued an F-15 pilot off the Gulf Coast of Florida, and then helped deliver his own baby daughter all in the same day! Quick with a smile, Ken soaks up all that life has to offer, noting that "there are only moments in life- and you've gotta enjoy every one of them."
Rebecca 'almost always smiling' King is also a returning member to the team. She just can't get enough of those PJs! This is her fifth time racing on the team and she rounds out the team with her strong background in ice climbing, mountain climbing, canoeing, kayaking, and long distance running. Her strong athletic background makes her tremendous asset to the team. Now addicted to endorphins, she started an adventure racing series in Alaska.
Brock, a newcomer to the team, has gotten bitten by the adventure-racing bug. After leading two teams to reputable finishes (4th and 1st) in two short distance adventure races (and after much pleading from Ken!), Brock decided he's ready for the big leagues. Also after several years as a Pararescueman, Brock decided he needed some more mental torture, so he headed off the Med School. Soon to be known as 'Brock the Doc' all those long hours he spent studying will come in handy as he tends to all the team aches and pains that adventure racing is known to bring.
Randy Wilkes, another newcomer to the team is also moving up to the big leagues with this race. With his PJ background and several short races under his belt (and again more pleading from Ken!) he's ready for the challenge. Always ready to dig in and tackle any task put to him, all the while kidding-Hey that's not my job! You can't make me do it! He's sure to fit in with the team's easygoing spirit. Since laughter is the balm for all Eco pain we know there will plenty of need for Randy's' shenanigans.
While generally carefree and spirited, Team Brat Plastics also knows when its time to focus on the task at hand. Living by Shackletons' motto-Fortitudine Vincimus (Through Endurance We Conquer) they feel they are ready for their primal quest.
Neither Alaskan mosquito nor Fiji's Fungus will keep us from our Primal Quest!
